for those in authority

Read 1 Timothy 2:1-7.

Heavenly Father, I thank you for your blessing me with life in an orderly and structured land. I know many of my brothers and sisters in Christ do not enjoy that blessing, but you have privileged me with a peaceful and quiet life. So I lift up to you every government official in this land today and ask your blessing on each of them, from the President on down. Give them wisdom and insight. Grow within them courage and perseverance. May their justness be tempered with compassion and may their exercise of mercy not forget justice. Help them to go about their duties with a caring eye on the vulnerable and weak in our nation, be they citizens or aliens. Shut our mouths when we complain and grumble over government and loose our talks to beg your blessing on our leaders and on the leaders of every nation.

Stir the hearts of all the people of this nation, Father, to a mindfulness of your place and purposes and so, might we all be moved to live lives that are godly and holy. Make the paths straight for the declaration and spread of your good news. As we enjoy a taste of the blessings you pour out on us through the effective and good rule of those in authority over us, may we respond with humble gratitude and obedience to this end, that more and more people come to submit to you and praise you, rather than question you and defy you. As your son laid down his life for our souls, may we lay down our lives to every extension and expression of your Son’s reign here and now. May we obey the laws of this land that reflect your character just as we would obey your laws. Give us the same that we ask for our leaders.

This we pray in the name of the Lord Jesus. Amen.
