This reading begins, of course, (Matt. 19:1-12) with a truly difficult passage – Jesus’ longest recorded statement on marriage and divorce. Numerous scholars from a range of backgrounds have wrestled through the ages with how to correctly construe Jesus’ teaching on this subject. Not a few have come down with an understanding of the text that is, shall we say, non-traditional. Of the many that could be referenced, three examples will suffice here for further reading on this subject online: (1) Edward Fudge’s understanding (2) an article in Restoration Quarterly by Gary Collier and (3) the books available online for David Instone-Brewer.
