I’ll continue the current Sunday morning sermon series through the Book of Acts (The Acts of God) through the first quarter or third of 2006, concluding before Easter (April 16). Where will I go from there? Well, what better way could there be than to allowing the note on which Acts ends to have the final say? The Book of Acts concludes with these words:
“Boldly and without hindrance he preached the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ.” Acts 28:31 NIV
With that very thought in mind, I’ll then deliberately coordinate the majority of my Sunday morning sermons to go along with texts we are reading in the Gospels in our church-wide Know His Voice Bible reading project. Consequently, we’ll be reading the words of our Lord, preaching and teaching about Jesus and lifting him up as the Christ in it all! We’ll entitle this sermon series And Be Set Free!, a title based on Jesus’ words in John 8:24:
“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Quite a few of my sermons from our Lord’s own words in this series will center on passages that are particularly challenging and difficult. They are tough texts, words hard for us to hear, because of the strong pull, the gravity, if you please, of our sins. But Jesus dares to tell us the truth and through him, truth embodied, we can be set free from all that is bondage to us! Other sermons will deal with key questions Jesus asked of those he spoke to – and still asks of us today. These are questions that should be pondered over and considered carefully again and again by every disciple.
All in all – good stuff! It’s all about him, and that’s what our preaching / pondering next year will stress. Or as Jesus said:
“. . . hear God’s word and put it into practice.” Luke 8:21
